Disability Sunday

About Disability Sunday

Thank you for taking part in this year’s Disability Sunday on 2nd October, which coincides with the well-established International Day of People with Disability on Monday 3rd December. It is a great opportunity to reflect on the truth that all people are created in God’s image and precious in his sight. As it is written in 1 Corinthians 12:14, “Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.”

According to the 2011 Australian Census, 2.9% of Australians have an intellectual disability and about 20% have some form of disability (e.g. mental, physical). This proportion of the population, however, is hardly represented in our churches. Disability Sunday is an opportunity to increase your church’s awareness, understanding and acceptance of this people group. For churches running a Jesus Club program, it’s also a great chance for the rest of the congregation to know about this ministry.

So let’s use this day to consider how we welcome people with disability into our community and enable them to participate fully in the life of the church. In this pack you will find helpful ideas and resources to get your church ready for the day.
